'Asked for the cameras to be turned off' - Carbone reveals Maldini-Camarda anecdote
"The first time I saw him was at a seven-a-side football trial. He did things with incredible simplicity: direct and effective play, and decision-making beyond his years,"
"You could see it in the way he used his body and received the ball: these are innate qualities. Even before the move reached the penalty area, he already knew where to position himself to get there first."
"I remember when, at 15, we called him up for the U18s to play a friendly against the first team. He was marked by Fikayo Tomori and scored straight away."
"Maldini [Milan's technical director], who was watching, immediately asked for the Milan TV cameras to be turned off. Camarda wasn't under contract yet and didn't want foreign clubs to notice him."
Gabriele Camarda scored his first Serie A goal for Lecce in a 1-1 draw with Bologna and opened his Italy U21 account with a chip from the penalty spot against Sweden and a brace against Armenia in European Championship qualifiers. He is on loan at Lecce and will return to AC Milan next summer for evaluation after supporting the club since childhood. Angelo Carbone recalled seeing Camarda at a seven-a-side trial and praised his simplicity, decision-making and positional sense, noting a U18 friendly where Camarda scored while marked by Fikayo Tomori. Milan signed him in July to a contract through 2027 with roughly €450,000 salary, extended that deal to 2028, and arranged the Lecce loan including an option to buy and a buy-back clause.
