CorSera: Inter's owners Oaktree overtake RedBird in bid for NBA franchise - the situation
"According to today's edition of the Corriere della Sera (via MilanPress), Oaktree have overtaken RedBird in the race to land a franchise that would play in the city, despite Gerry Cardinale's strong pressure. The project should start in 2027, but given some difficulties along the way it could even be postponed to 2028, once the whole issue of the Los Angeles Olympics in the summer of 2028 has been concluded."
"Cardinale has already spoken with the NBA and Leo dell'Orco, the number one at the existing Milan-based basketball side Olimpia Milano. However, Oaktree have also started discussions with them to understand how to manage the situation and are said to be ahead."
"The NBA has set March 31 as the deadline to demonstrate interest and accept the rules and their model, while the amount to access is expected to be around €500m. The Italian Basketball Federation and FIBA, the international basketball federation, support the arrival of the American league in Europe to give the Euroleague a boost."
Inter's owners Oaktree Capital have surpassed AC Milan's owners RedBird Capital in competing for an NBA Europe franchise to be based in Milan. The franchise project is scheduled to begin in 2027, though potential delays could push it to 2028 following the Los Angeles Olympics. RedBird's owner Gerry Cardinale has engaged with the NBA and Olimpia Milano leadership, but Oaktree has also initiated discussions and currently holds the advantage. The NBA established March 31 as the deadline for demonstrating interest and accepting their operational model. Entry into the franchise is estimated to cost approximately €500 million. Both the Italian Basketball Federation and FIBA support the NBA's European expansion to strengthen the Euroleague.
