Airbus has certified a 'Taxibot' to transport its single-aisle planes from airport stands to runways, reducing environmental impact. Developed under the SESAR project's HERON initiative, Taxibot can save up to half the fuel used during ground operations by eliminating engine usage for taxiing. This innovation offers airlines cost savings, quieter operations, and enhanced sustainability. The system allows a human operator to control Taxibot, driving it close to the runway before the aircraft engines are engaged. Airbus has tested this technology for years before its recent certification for A320 and A220 aircraft.
The SESAR project created the HERON sub-project, which aims to reduce the aviation industry's environmental impact by implementing innovative operational techniques that enhance efficiency and sustainability.
Taxibot meets the HERON goals by pulling aircraft from an airport stand to the runway instead of using jet engines, potentially saving half the fuel used on the ground.
