Don't rush to plant corn - it's early | Corn School
"The probability of achieving high yields and strong economic returns remains solid until around May 15 to 20. That is really when we need to start thinking about potential loss. Until then, we're pretty safe."
"By May 30th... returns were still somewhere around 90 per cent of maximum. The drop-off is gradual, pointing to relatively flat yield responses through much of May."
"You need to balance that with what conditions are like... putting the seed in a position to be successful. Timely planting remains important, but there's less need to rush into marginal conditions early in May."
Wet spring weather in Ontario has delayed fieldwork, but research indicates that corn can still be planted successfully until mid-May. Trials show that high yields and economic returns remain strong until around May 15 to 20. Even by May 30, growers can achieve about 90 percent of maximum returns. Planting in June leads to a sharper decline in yield potential. Field conditions should take precedence over calendar dates, emphasizing the importance of suitable planting conditions over rushing to plant early in May.
