The recent rise in the incidence of bovine TB in Ireland has prompted urgent calls for action from Minister Heydon. With restrictions having increased by 36% in two years, this situation represents the worst setback in over twenty years. The Minister warns that it poses significant emotional and financial challenges for farming families. A summit is planned to discuss a revamped TB eradication plan, emphasizing the need for science-based strategies and strong leadership to ensure effective measures are implemented across the agricultural sector.
An increasing number of farm families are facing the emotional and financial hardship of a TB breakdown, as we have reached a crossroads in our efforts to control and ultimately eradicate bovine TB.
If left unchecked, this disease will impact many more families throughout rural Ireland and reduce output at both farm and processor levels.
We must take a robust, science-based approach. If we do, we can not only halt the current increase but begin to make progress again towards eradication.
Leadership will be required across every level of the sector, including within my own Department, to ensure we implement the most effective measures.
