President Trump announced plans to release new policies regarding migrant farm labor in response to a worker shortage on farms, stating that migrants are naturally suited for agricultural work. Labor leader Dolores Huerta criticized Trump's remarks as rooted in racism and discrimination, recalling historical exploitation of farmworkers. Huerta criticized past assertions about labor suitability based on ethnicity and highlighted how racism has long affected various immigrant groups. A White House spokesperson reinforced Trump's commitment to agricultural success, while discussions on land ownership for Chinese Americans were noted.
"People that live in the inner city are not doing that work. They've tried, we've tried, everybody tried. They don't do it. These people do it naturally. Naturally," Trump said.
Dolores Huerta stated, "It's all racism and discrimination and it's nothing new. Grew over time with claims that farmworkers were better suited to specific work based on their background."
Huerta connected the past discrimination against Chinese laborers in California to current sentiments, stating, "Racism against the Chinese, the Mexicans, the Filipinos, the Punjabis, it's all based on people's color of their skin."
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson remarked, "Trump is a tireless advocate for American farmers who trusts them and is committed to ensuring they have the workforce needed to remain successful."
