The program covers the BSE crisis and Canadian Farmer Sentiment Index differences between livestock and cropping sectors. The final segment features Michael Boruque of Fertilizer Canada, focusing on trade infrastructure in Canada. Fertilizer Canada helped coordinate a letter from more than 20 farm and industry organizations to Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Minister of Transportation. The letter encourages government investment in trade infrastructure to support major trade promises, including doubling agricultural trade within a set period. Diversifying trade away from heavy reliance on the U.S. is presented as requiring infrastructure improvements, with examples referenced for specific locations and logistics.
"They were one of the groups of, I think it was like upwards of 20 different farm organisations, industry associations that wrote a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney as well as the Minister of Transportation, really seeking and encouraging the government to, you know, if we're going to be making big promises when it comes to trade, infrastructure or trade, you know, trying to double agricultural trade within a given period of time, if we're looking to diversify Canadian trade away from being so reliant on the US which we, we've heard a lot about, it's going to mean we got to invest in some trade infrastructure and Michael has some examples of that."
