In a nationwide recall, more than 1.8 million cartons of eye drops have been affected due to potential sterility issues in manufacturing, raising serious health concerns. The FDA and AvKARE, the distributor, highlighted a 'lack of assurance of sterility,' noting risks such as serious eye infections that could result in temporary vision loss or blindness. Previously, the CDC linked contaminated eye drops to 50 infections and one death in 2023. Consumers are advised to stop using the affected products and return them for a refund, as the recall encompasses various eye drop formulations.
Using eye drops that are not properly sterilized can lead to serious eye infections, potentially causing temporary vision loss or even blindness.
It is not possible to rule out patient risks resulting from use of these products, the AvKARE notice states.
AvKARE urged consumers who purchased the potentially contaminated drops to stop using them immediately.
The FDA discovered the manufacturing issues during an audit, but did not specify who manufactured the drops.
