Australia has launched the world's largest fully electric ferry, Hull 096, designed by Incat, marking a significant advancement in clean maritime transport. This 130-meter vessel, built for Buquebus, can carry 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles entirely on battery power. It features a groundbreaking 40 MWh battery system, enabling operation without fossil fuels. Specially designed for the South American route, it emphasizes Tasmania's maritime innovation. Tasmania's premier acknowledged this launch as a momentous achievement in emphasizing the state's shipbuilding capabilities, with the ferry boasting the largest duty-free shopping deck on any vessel.
"This ship changes the game," said Incat Chairman Robert Clifford. "We've been building world-leading vessels here in Tasmania for more than four decades, and Hull 096 is the most ambitious, most complex, and most important project we've ever delivered."
Tasmania has long been a leader in maritime innovation, and Incat's latest achievement is a testament to our state's world-class shipbuilding capabilities and proud seafaring heritage," said Tasmania's premier, Jeremy Rockliff.
