Vermont Governor Phil Scott has paused the state's electric vehicle sales requirements due to concerns about the necessary infrastructure and technological advances needed to meet California-style zero-emission vehicle regulations. These rules, adopted by Vermont and other states, aim to phase out gasoline vehicles by 2035. Automakers have expressed that the requirements could limit available gas-powered vehicles. Scott referenced inadequate charging infrastructure as a barrier, while Maryland's governor similarly delayed these rules until 2028. The debate continues amid congressional moves to repeal these environmental regulations, with California defending them as crucial for pollution reduction.
It's clear we don't have anywhere near enough charging infrastructure and insufficient technological advances in heavy-duty vehicles to meet current goals.
Major automakers have said the rules, which require at least 80% EVs by 2035 and no more than 20% plug-in hybrids, are unfeasible and lobbied against them.
