Recent research suggests that Malta's prehistoric temples, built between 3800BC and 2400BC, may have been used to train ancient seafarers in navigation by the stars. Researchers conducted statistical analyses of 32 structures and found that many temple entrances align with significant stars used for navigation, particularly during the Ġgantija phase. This discovery adds a new layer to our understanding of these ancient structures, indicating they may have served not only a religious or social purpose but also an educational one for maritime skills.
The Maltese temples may have served as navigational training sites for ancient seafarers, suggesting a blend of social and cosmological functions in their design.
Statistical analysis of 32 temple structures indicates that certain entrances align with key navigational stars, challenging the long-held mystery of their purpose.
