Amazon to acquire Apple's 20% stake in Globalstar, iPhone's satellite feature won't be affected

Amazon and Globalstar finalized an $11 billion acquisition deal. Amazon also needed to buy out Apple’s 20% stake in Globalstar, tied to a prior $1.1 billion commitment between Apple and Globalstar in 2024 that included a $400 million share purchase. Amazon plans to expand its satellite service business, Amazon Leo, using a low-orbit satellite constellation to deliver low-latency broadband connectivity. To complete the merger, Amazon created a new subsidiary, “Grapefruit Acquisition Sub II, LLC,” to acquire Apple’s stake. Globalstar supports satellite services for Apple, keeping Emergency SOS and Roadside Assistance working on iPhones and Apple Watches. Amazon said the deal will not affect Apple and will continue working with Apple while expanding partnerships and offering satellite services to other smartphone manufacturers.
