Apple is working on a new AirTag and a new HomePod mini
"Just as Xiaomi is rumored to be getting into the tracker business, Apple is working on upgrading its AirTag. The new AirTag was apparently supposed to come out this year, but was quietly pushed to the first half of 2026. When it arrives, it will bring with it an improved pairing process, enhanced Precision Finding, and detailed battery level reporting. Additionally, it will have a feature called Improved Moving, which will likely let you see its precise location even when it's moving around."
"And there's another feature that's focused on improving the tracking accuracy in crowded places. It's unclear whether these new features will make it to the original AirTag through a software update, and if so, which ones. The improved Precision Finding, for what it's worth, may rely on an upgraded UWB chip, so that's probably out of the question for the older AirTag."
Apple plans to release an upgraded AirTag in the first half of 2026. The device will include an improved pairing process, enhanced Precision Finding, and detailed battery level reporting. A feature called Improved Moving will likely provide precise location while the tracker is in motion. Another feature will focus on improving tracking accuracy in crowded places. It is uncertain which features, if any, will be back-ported to the original AirTag via software updates. Improved Precision Finding may require an upgraded UWB chip and therefore may not be available for older AirTags. Apple will also refresh the HomePod mini with an S10 chip, replacing the S5; Apple Intelligence features are unlikely to be supported.
