Microsoft has announced during its Build 2025 conference that it will eliminate onboarding fees for developers wishing to publish to the Microsoft Store starting June 2025. Previously, developers had to pay approximately $19 to register an account. This move comes amidst increasing scrutiny of developer fees in the tech industry, particularly as Apple faces legal pressure over its App Store commissions. Although Microsoft will not charge a registration fee, it will maintain a commission for developers using its own commerce platform, with 12% fees for games and 15% for apps.
Starting June 2025, individual developers will be able to sign up and publish apps to the Microsoft Store without having to pay to register an account.
The waiving of the Microsoft Store's app publishing fees comes as Microsoft rival Apple faces intense legal pressure to eliminate certain developer fees charged in the App Store.
Meanwhile, Google charges a one-time $25 fee for Google Play, the app store on Android.
Developers who use their own commerce system keep 100% of the revenue for non-gaming apps.
