Google is testing an AI Inbox tab for Gmail that analyzes email content, summarizes messages, and suggests action items and topics to catch up on. The feature identifies VIP contacts using signals such as frequent correspondents, contact-list membership, and inferred relationships from message content. The AI Inbox is currently limited to trusted testers and will expand more broadly in coming months. Google states user emails will not be used to train Gemini and that users can opt out when the feature becomes public. Handling of newsletters and presentation of news alerts remains unspecified, and earlier email-summarization tools showed unreliable results in prior tests.
