"In a narrow set of cases, we believe AI can undermine, rather than defend, democratic values. Some uses are also simply outside the bounds of what today's technology can safely and reliably do. [...] We cannot in good conscience accede to their request."
"The Leftwing nut jobs at Anthropic have made a DISASTROUS MISTAKE trying to STRONG-ARM the Department of War, and force them to obey their Terms of Service instead of our Constitution."
"America's warfighters will never be held hostage by the ideological whims of Big Tech."
Anthropic declined a Department of Defense contract after the DoD demanded unrestricted access to use the company's AI technology for any lawful purpose. Anthropic requested safeguards preventing use in mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons systems. The DoD imposed a February 27 deadline for compliance, threatening blacklisting. CEO Dario Amodei stated the company could not ethically accept the terms, arguing certain AI applications undermine democratic values or exceed current technological safety limits. After the deadline passed without agreement, President Trump ordered all government agencies to cease using Anthropic technology and directed the Pentagon to designate the company a national security supply-chain risk, effectively barring other defense contractors from working with Anthropic.
