Can We Remain Human in the Age of AI?
"Like any tool, AI can be used for good or for ill. If these technologies are to enhance human flourishing, rather than impede it, then we need to consider whether the design of AI technologies and our engagement with them are oriented towards our own flourishing. Of particular concern is how our use of these technologies is affecting our capacities for reason, for relationship, for transcendence, which go to the heart of our human nature."
"We've made use of our general framework for conceptualizing and assessing human flourishing, oriented around six domains: happiness, health, meaning, character, relationships, and financial resources. We argue in our new paper that when evaluating AI, these dimensions must guide decisions on the design and use of AI technologies related to the type of output provided, specific product design, and our engagement with those products."
AI technologies present extraordinary potential across numerous applications, yet their rapid development raises critical questions about human flourishing. These tools can enhance or impede human wellbeing depending on their design and use. Key concerns center on whether AI affects our capacities for reason, relationships, and transcendence—fundamental aspects of human nature. A flourishing lens framework evaluates AI across multiple dimensions: output type, product design, user engagement, effects on human knowledge, and self-realization. This assessment framework considers six domains of human flourishing: happiness, health, meaning, character, relationships, and financial resources. The central question remains whether AI technologies genuinely enhance fulfillment or threaten to diminish human lives.
