"AI is a paradox. (and will likely remain this way for the near future) Despite my best efforts, I still waver between bullish optimism (glass half full), where AI superpowers work, freeing up time for Designers to make more, and rapidly scale rad shit in the world, to bearish pessimism (glass half empty), where AI squeezes creativity, reduces opportunity, and destroys the planet."
"I just heard NPR quote Bill Gates' prediction... "... within the next 10 years, we may only work two days a week thanks to AI and automation " - Bill Gates I do not think this vision will come to pass, especially in a 10-year time horizon, but fun to think about, if you are a Billionaire, I suppose. AI has some benefits (bulls say...)"
AI creates a paradox of simultaneous promise and threat. Some advances free designers to produce more and scale ambitious work, while others threaten creativity, opportunities, and the environment. Predictions of dramatically reduced workweeks due to automation circulate, but such outcomes are uncertain within short timeframes. Designers who cultivate conceptual abilities through sketching and deliberate idea generation can leverage human strengths—intuition, ambiguity tolerance, and divergent thinking—to complement AI tools. Strengthened conceptual practice sustains creative control, generates novel solutions that models cannot easily replicate, and preserves professional relevance as AI capabilities evolve.
