"AI is a paradox. (and will likely remain this way for the near future) Despite my best efforts, I still waver between bullish optimism (glass half full), where AI superpowers work, freeing up time for Designers to make more, and rapidly scale rad shit in the world, to bearish pessimism (glass half empty), where AI squeezes creativity, reduces opportunity, and destroys the planet."
"I just heard NPR quote Bill Gates' prediction... "... within the next 10 years, we may only work two days a week thanks to AI and automation " - Bill Gates I do not think this vision will come to pass, especially in a 10-year time horizon, but fun to think about, if you are a Billionaire, I suppose. AI has some benefits (bulls say...)"
AI produces a paradox of perceived progress by enabling productivity gains while also threatening creativity, opportunity, and the environment. Optimistic scenarios promise freed time for designers to iterate and scale ambitious work. Pessimistic scenarios predict compressed creative roles and fewer opportunities as automation spreads. Bold predictions of drastically reduced workweeks may apply to a few but are unlikely broadly in the near decade. Growing conceptual abilities via sketching and prolific idea generation strengthens human capacities like framing, divergent thinking, and exploring alternatives. Those skills let designers collaborate with AI, retain creative leadership, and remain competitive despite automation advances.
