Shengjia Zhao has been named chief scientist for Meta's superintelligence AI group, aiming to build AI models that perform at or above human level. Zhao previously worked at OpenAI, contributing to the original ChatGPT and other significant projects. His leadership role has been formalized as Meta aggressively recruits AI talent to compete with rivals like OpenAI and Google. Alongside Zhao, Alexandr Wang heads Meta’s AI initiatives, and Yann LeCun will continue as chief scientist for an internal research group at the company.
Shengjia co-founded the new lab and has been our lead scientist from day one. Now that our recruiting is going well and our team is coming together, we have decided to formalize his leadership role.
Zhao, who was a co-author on the original ChatGPT research paper, was also a key researcher on OpenAI's first reasoning model, o1, which has helped popularize a wave of similar so-called 'chain-of-thought' systems.
