OpenAI deprecated GPT-4o and three other versions, setting the retirement date for February 13 after a January 30 announcement. A Change.org petition created in April 2025 by Sophie Witt gathered roughly 21,900 signatures calling to save GPT-4o. Supporters cited the model's unique conversational style, warmth, and irreplaceable user experience and warned of subscription cancellations. OpenAI cited very low usage (about 0.1%) and noted that the model produced "responses that were overly supportive but disingenuous." The company previously paused the sunset after user appeals and said feedback influenced GPT-5.1 and GPT-5.2 development.
"For many of us, GPT-4o offers a unique and irreplaceable user experience, combining qualities and capabilities that we value, regardless of performance benchmarks,"
"OpenAI wrote in a 2025 blog post that the model was known for "responses that were overly supportive but disingenuous.""
"OpenAI gave GPT-4o a shoutout in its January 30 blog post, saying that many users told the company they like the model's "conversational style and warmth" last year."
