Surya is an open-source, 366 million-parameter foundation model for heliophysics designed to understand and predict how solar activity affects Earth and space-based technology. The model was pre-trained on nine years of high-resolution solar observations from Nasa's Solar Dynamic Observatory, using data from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly and Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager instruments. Surya uses self-supervised learning on unlabelled, large solar images to identify patterns without manual event categorization. The model aims to support space weather forecasting and protect critical infrastructure such as GPS, power grids, telecommunications, satellites, spacecraft, and aviation from solar flares and coronal mass ejections.
IBM and Nasa have made available on Hugging Face an open source artificial intelligence (AI) model called Surya, trained to understand and predict how solar activity affects Earth and space-based technology. Surya applies AI to solar image interpretation and space weather forecasting research. According to IBM, it can be used to help protect GPS navigation, power grids and telecommunications from the Sun's ever-changing nature.
