Netflix is buying Ben Affleck's AI startup
"I wanted to build a workflow that captures what happens on a set, with vocabulary that matched the language cinematographers and directors already spoke and included the kind of consistency and controls they would expect."
"Unlike AI models designed to generate visual outputs based on text, InterPositive's tech is focused on ingesting dailies (raw footage from in-progress productions) and creating assets that can then be incorporated into the post-production process."
"I had a responsibility to my peers and our industry, to protect the power of human creativity and the people behind it. Netflix's history of applying and scaling technology responsibly makes them the ideal partner to take InterPositive to the next level."
Netflix has acquired InterPositive, an AI company founded by Ben Affleck in 2022 that develops production tools for film and television. All 16 of InterPositive's engineers and researchers will join Netflix, with Affleck becoming a senior advisor. Affleck created the company after observing AI's early rise in production and identifying gaps in existing tools. InterPositive's technology ingests raw footage from productions and creates assets for post-production use, enabling filmmakers to manipulate backgrounds, reframe shots, color correct, and remove visual elements like stunt wires more efficiently. The company's customized models use industry-standard vocabulary familiar to cinematographers and directors, prioritizing human creativity and creative control while streamlining technical workflows.
