New AI Models Could Let Us Chat with Dolphins

Dolphins, known for their intelligence and social interactions, communicate through unique clicks and whistles. Researchers at Google, in collaboration with the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Wild Dolphin Project, have created DolphinGemma, a large language model designed to process dolphin vocalizations. The model was trained using acoustic data from Atlantic spotted dolphins and is able to produce dolphin-like sounds, including unique sequences of clicks and whistles. The goal is to enable better understanding and potential two-way communication between humans and dolphins.
