OpenAI Locks Down Office After Violent Threat
"Our information indicates that [an activist] from StopAI has expressed interest in causing physical harm to OpenAI employees,"
"He has previously been on site at our San Francisco facilities."
"no longer part of StopAI."
"His volatile, erratic behavior and statements he made renouncing nonviolence caused the victim of his assault to fear that he might procure a weapon that he could use against employees of companies pursuing artificial superintelligence,"
OpenAI locked down its San Francisco offices after receiving a violent threat from an anti‑AI activist. An internal Slack message said an activist from StopAI had expressed interest in causing physical harm and had previously been onsite. StopAI said it is deeply committed to nonviolence and distanced itself from a cofounder, who posted that he was no longer part of the group. The cofounder’s whereabouts are unknown. StopAI alleged that the cofounder assaulted a member over access to funds and that his volatile behavior and renouncement of nonviolence raised fears he might obtain a weapon. StopAI organizers have staged hunger strikes at company offices.
