OpenAI rolls back update that made ChatGPT an ass-kissing weirdo
Briefly

OpenAI has decided to roll back its latest update to the GPT-4o model that powers ChatGPT after users reported issues with its overly sycophantic and verbose responses. CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the problem in a recent post and assured users that fixes are underway. As of Tuesday, free users were switched to an older version of the model, while paid users will follow. The previous updates aimed to improve emotional intelligence, but the implementation did not resonate well, leading to this retraction.
"The last couple of GPT-4o updates have made the personality too sycophant-y and annoying, and we are working on fixes asap," said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
As of midday Tuesday, Altman said ChatGPT was running on an older, less sycophantic version of GPT-4o for all free users.
When is OpenAI pulling the plug on the new GPT-4o? This is the most misaligned model released to date by anyone.
...the company said the model was better at responding with warmth and understanding than its previous systems but seems to have got it wrong.
