Two U.S. Republican senators reached an agreement to revise a federal moratorium on state regulation of artificial intelligence, setting it to five years and allowing states to enforce rules on child online safety and protecting artists' images. Initially proposed by Ted Cruz, the moratorium's duration was reduced alongside provisions against imposing burdensome regulations. Tennessee's ELVIS Act and Texas legislation highlighted state efforts to guard against AI misuse. However, opposition remains, with several governors urging Congress to empower states' regulatory authority over AI issues for citizen protection.
We cannot support a provision that takes away states' powers to protect our citizens. Let states function as the laboratories of democracy they were intended to be and allow state leaders to protect our people.
Congress should stand by the Cruz provision to keep America First in AI.
