At least nine engineers, including two co-founders, publicly announced departures from xAI in the past week, though two exits occurred a few weeks earlier. Neither xAI nor Elon Musk issued public comments on the departures. Co-founder departures are uncommon at startups, and more than half of xAI's founding team has now left. Several employees followed within days, raising questions about company stability. Three departing staff members say they will begin something new with other former xAI engineers. Other departing employees cited a desire for greater autonomy and smaller teams to build frontier AI more rapidly amid anticipated productivity gains.
