Tamay Besiroglu aims to automate jobs globally, starting with software engineering. Despite its desk-based nature, software engineering encompasses numerous complexities beyond coding. Engineers must comprehend organizational operations and communicate with stakeholders effectively. Mechanize uses reinforcement learning to train AI in software tasks but recognizes full automation will require significant time. The startup recently moved into a new office in San Francisco, with ambitions to expand from fewer than ten employees to twenty within a year. Popularity and criticism regarding its mission have generated substantial public discussion on the implications of AI in the workforce.
"Software engineering is just a lot more than writing code," the cofounder and CEO of Mechanize told Business Insider.
"Reality is surprisingly detailed, often," Besiroglu said. So, even if the company can have digital stand-ins do part of what people do, a full AI replacement for human software engineers could take a decade or more, he said.
