In a message on X, he said he looked back with appreciation on his involvement in the founding and early stages of xAI. "In addition to internal shifts, the company is being scrutinized by various regulators in Europe, Asia, and the United States. Jimmy Ba, co-founder and AI researcher, announced he is stepping down from xAI and said he appreciated his involvement in the founding and early stages. His exit follows Tony Wu's departure and joins recent exits by co-founders Igor Babuschkin, Kyle Kosic, and Christian Szegedy, while Greg Yang is scaling back to focus on recovery from Lyme disease. Ba contributed to the Grok 4 models. xAI merged with SpaceX via a stock swap reportedly valuing SpaceX at $1 trillion and xAI at $250 billion as plans for a SpaceX public offering circulate. Regulators in Europe, Asia, and the United States have opened investigations into alleged misuse of Grok and its image generator to produce explicit deepfake images, including alleged use of minors’ images, raising questions about internal stability and strategic direction.
