"Themed "pure intention," the eighth edition of the event-led by a curatorial team comprising Duncan Bass, Hsu Fang-Tze, Ong Puay Khim, and Selene Yap-seeks to complicate the stereotype of Singapore as a city built purely through the artificial intent of top-down urban planning and public policy. To do so, it focuses on revealing the multitudes of unregulated lived experiences thriving within Singapore's highly controlled urban spaces:"
"The exhibition is spread across more than twenty locations throughout the island, with the organizing Singapore Art Museum (SAM) hosting only a small fraction of the works. As a result, my two-day press preview inevitably took on the air of a tourist trip, jumping in and out of cars and trekking between various venues, from 1960s public housing estates to old shopping malls, city parks, and a former girls' school."
The biennial adopts the theme "pure intention" and situates artworks across more than twenty island locations to challenge perceptions of Singapore as solely the product of top-down planning. A curatorial team led by Duncan Bass, Hsu Fang-Tze, Ong Puay Khim, and Selene Yap prioritizes embedding work within actual communities so pieces resonate with local ecology and history. The Singapore Art Museum hosts only a small fraction of the works, producing a dispersed program that required movement between sites. Organizers aim to balance bringing art into spaces without imposing on communities, and many works engage with existing local rhythms.
