A groundbreaking exhibit at the Von King Cultural Arts Center in Brooklyn presents artwork created by incarcerated individuals from Rikers Island, aiming to highlight their untold stories and artistic abilities. Inspired by a heartfelt gift from her incarcerated husband, Colleen Flood initiated the exhibit to shed light on the creative potential often overlooked within the prison system. With the support of the NYC Department of Correction, the exhibit not only features 20 pieces but also allows one featured artist, Brian Croskey, to visit the gallery, further humanizing those behind bars. The exhibit will be available to the public until the end of April.
I was just so blown away by just the detail and the intricacy of it that I was just like, this is absolutely gallery worthy.
Just in the conversation that we had with the Department of Correction, they have on Rikers Island a whole dance team. They have a drama club. There's so much more to them than what they did.
We decided to do this exhibit to give artists a voice because we knew that the talent existed by way of Colleen's husband.
I'm astonished that someone viewed my artwork and thought it was worthy to put in an art center.
