El Campanil Theatre in Antioch at risk of closure without more funding, board president says
Briefly

El Campanil Theatre faces potential closure due to financial difficulties exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and increased competition for entertainment. Board President Kathie Campbell indicated that audience spending habits have shifted, leading to financial troubles. To address debts, the facility was sold to an out-of-state owner who supports keeping the theater operational. Despite the efforts, the board anticipates a possible closure by December 2025 or early 2026 if conditions do not improve. Opened in 1928, the theater transitioned into a community performing arts center in 2003 after being purchased by the El Campanil Theatre Preservation Foundation.
"So many theaters have closed for that reason, aside from the fact that you can get entertainment in a lot of different ways now, you can get it on Netflix, you go to a winery for a concert."
"We all hope it doesn't shut down. We're desperately trying to prevent that, but with the current status, we are looking at probably by December 2025 or early 2026, we may have to close our doors."
