Greta Thunberg and Extinction Rebellion Members Turn Venice's Canal Green to Protest COP30 Outcome
"Greta Thunberg and several members of the Extinction Rebellion environmental group turned Venice's Grand Canal bright green on Monday to protest what they view as the world's slow progress in transitioning away from fossil fuels. They dropped non-toxic fluorescein dye into the canal from boats, making it look like a radioactive, toxic soup. The stunt was one of series of protests at lakes, fountains, and waterways across 10 Italian cities in the wake of the recent United Nations Climate Change Conference ( COP30) in Brazil."
""Let's symbolically paint green the waters of Italy, many contaminated daily by industries supported by our own government, because this is the world toward which current climate policies are dragging us," said an Extinction Rebellion activist identified as Selene in a statement. The Swedish activist and 35 other protestors were banned from Venice for 48 hours as a result. They were also fined $178 each by Venetian officials."
Greta Thunberg and Extinction Rebellion activists dropped non-toxic fluorescein dye into Venice's Grand Canal, turning the water bright green to protest slow global transition away from fossil fuels. The action was part of coordinated protests at lakes, fountains, and waterways across ten Italian cities following the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Brazil. Activists unfurled a "Stop Ecocide" banner from the Rialto Bridge, dressed in red with veiled faces, and staged a mock funeral to symbolize COP30's failure to agree on binding fossil fuel limits. An activist named Selene linked polluted Italian waters to industries backed by government; 36 protesters received 48-hour bans and fines.
