Martinez Cohen and Bush, former RISD students, shift from creating potpourri to designing monumental terrazzo artworks, incorporating reclaimed materials. Their collaborative, nonhierarchical approach has resulted in functional designs like benches and tables that start with drawings before evolving into polished slabs. They recently worked on a mural for a Staten Island school using original site rubble. Inspired by Fabergé eggs, they recognize their responsibility toward using irregular waste materials, aiming to leave a significant urban imprint, including dream projects like subway platforms.
"Originally our goal was to make terrazzo of diamonds and rubies and meteorites and things like that, but now we feel a responsibility to the more irregular materials..."
"Their work makes a lot of sense in an architectural context, praising the open mind and genuine enthusiasm..."
