Eric Braman, a Springfield-based artist, created a lesson aimed at teaching fourth graders the impact of punctuation through performance. In a 60-minute video, students engage with unpunctuated text and practice delivering lines with varying intonation based on punctuation marks. The exercise not only focuses on the emotional delivery of text but also embeds grammar lessons. This lesson is part of a series of 96 educational videos aimed at integrating arts into elementary education across Oregon, enhancing students' engagement with language and performance.
"They have to think, 'how do I embody a punctuation?'" Braman said, explaining how the lesson encourages students to understand and convey emotion through punctuation.
Braman designed the lesson to teach students about the effects punctuation has on language, as well as how to convey that meaning in theatrical performance.
Even though the words are the same, the speaker talks and acts slightly differently, depending on the punctuation.
The lesson on punctuation and performance is one of 96 such videos that aim to provide arts education to Oregon elementary students.
