"For the city, it introduces within the building a new public "street" and a major cultural venue, embodying collaboration as a foundation of its design."
The Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities marks a step-change for Oxford, consolidating the humanities into a critical mass of teaching, research and outreach. The centre creates concentrated academic programmes and shared resources that strengthen interdisciplinary exchange and public engagement. Within the building, a new public 'street' and a major cultural venue create civic-facing activity and a continuous urban route linking city and university. Collaboration is the foundation of the design, realized through flexible shared spaces, visible circulation and venues that encourage interaction among scholars, students and the public. The building supports outreach, cultural programming and increased visibility for humanities scholarship.
