South Africa Axes Venice Biennale Proposal Centering Gaza Victims
"should not be used to amplify similarly divisive global disputes that do not center South Africa's own story,"
"We need to use our platforms to sell our country to the world."
"unfolding crisis of displacement and death in Gaza,"
"highly divisive in nature"
The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture canceled a performance mourning victims of Israel's war on Gaza that had been selected for South Africa's 2026 Venice Biennale pavilion. The department stated the pavilion should not amplify divisive global disputes that do not center South Africa's own story and emphasized using platforms to promote the country. The Elegy proposal by Gabrielle Goliath and curator Ingrid Masondo had been chosen by an independent committee. The minister Gayton McKenzie prompted the rejection, objecting to Gaza-related content. The planned performance would have addressed Gaza's displacement and deaths, Hiba Abu Nada's killing, South African femicide, and the Herero and Nama genocide.
