"Space II sits in a residential neighborhood of a city renowned for its natural hot springs, known as onsen, which attract visitors to local resorts. Tapping into the geological and geothermal character of the area, has created an otherworldly installation resembling a cave reminiscent of tourist attractions with metal steps and railings. Gaping holes in the exterior make it appear as if the structure was carved from rock to look like a house rather than the other way around."
A modest two-story residence in Beppu, Oita Prefecture was transformed into an otherworldly cavern called Space II. The Japanese art collective, whose name translates to eye and is pronounced me, comprises artist Haruka Kojin, director Kenji Minamigawa, and installer Hirofumi Masui. The project hollowed out the private home to resemble a cave, with metal steps and railings and gaping exterior holes that make the structure appear carved from rock. The installation engages the city's geothermal and geological character and echoes local tourist cave attractions and nearby onsen culture. Visitors will be able to step inside Space II by reservation.
