"Selected as part of SMACH 2025, the international open-air art biennale in the Italian Dolomites, the installation Trace of Land, designed by ELSE, imagine a large, round hay bale traversing the slopes of Armentara, climbing, descending, leaping, and leaving a trail of dry grass behind."
"This poetic vision materializes in the landscape as a meandering canopy that follows the terrain, inviting reflection on labor, landscape, and renewal."
Trace of Land is an outdoor installation on the slopes of Armentara in the Italian Dolomites for SMACH 2025. The installation, designed by ELSE, envisions a large, round hay bale moving across the terrain—climbing, descending, leaping—and leaving a line of dry grass. The physical form reads as a meandering canopy that follows and contours the land. The work evokes agricultural labor, the cyclical character of the landscape, and processes of renewal through material traces. The installation encourages reflection on the interaction between human activity and natural topography.
