"Holzer has previously described Trump as an abomination, telling the Guardian in 2023 that WTF was about the damage one man can do, and what happened around him."
"As WTF swings across the gallery, it becomes increasingly frenetic and the words become illegible; it is a really interesting portrait of how text just infiltrates our daily lives now, and questioning ideas around truth and authority."
Jenny Holzer's LED sign artwork, WTF, debuted four years ago and will be featured in the National Gallery of Victoria's Triennial. The exhibition includes over 100 works from nearly 100 artists, focusing on truth, artificial intelligence, and digital culture. Holzer's work, which displays tweets from Donald Trump and QAnon, symbolizes the chaos of digital communication. The gallery's assistant director noted the piece questions truth and authority, while artist Avery Singer's painting Deepfake Stan also examines our relationship with truth through digitally altered images.
