The University of Utah purchased Robert Indiana's iconic LOVE sculpture for $4.5 million and installed it on the south lawn of the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. Donors contributed $2.5 million toward the acquisition and state funds covered the remainder. The stacked-letter LOVE image originated as a 1964 holiday card commissioned by the Museum of Modern Art; Indiana cast the first steel version in 1970 and placed it at Central Park's southwestern entrance. Indiana produced 86 versions of the sculpture worldwide. The sculpture will anchor the UMFA's outdoor collection, welcome visitors, and serve as a bridge to the wider community.
