Sarah Lucas’s public sculpture “VENUS VICTORIA” (2026) will be installed at the New Museum entrance plaza for two years. The work features flailing arms and large pink breasts, with a subversive feminine figure perched atop a dusty washing machine in bright yellow high heels. The sculpture was unveiled on May 12 and is part of a decade-long series of public commissions by women artists. Lucas adapted a figure from her ongoing Bunnies series, originally made as knotted pantyhose figures seated on chairs. She chose the monumental form for its exuberance, optimism, and general good feeling, describing it as a needed start for a new era at the museum. Visitors and passersby stop to photograph the artwork.
"The artist said she chose to adapt this particular figure from Bunnies to monumental form for its “exuberance, optimism, and general good feeling,” qualities that struck her as “what we always need a bit more of, and a good way to start the new era of the New Museum.”"
