Darin Ruf suing Reds for suffering career-ending injury on tarp
Briefly

Darin Ruf, a 38-year-old former MLB player, is suing the Cincinnati Reds after suffering a career-ending injury from an uncovered tarp roller at Great American Ball Park during a game in June 2023. The lawsuit claims the team neglected to maintain safe field conditions, leading to Ruf fracturing his kneecap while chasing a foul ball. Ruf's complaint indicates he sustained 'permanent and substantial deformities' and is pursuing punitive and compensatory damages, highlighting a lack of safety protocols in place regarding the grounds crew's maintenance duties.
This didn't need to happen. I wish it didn't happen. Players shouldn't have to worry about hidden hazards like that on a major league field.
This was an obvious and avoidable risk. There are basic safety protocols every MLB team should follow. Leaving an unpadded metal roller on the edge of the field is inexcusable.
