The Austin City Council recently approved a resolution to explore and maximize rooftop solar installations on municipal buildings and other public facilities. Supported by organizations like Public Citizen, this initiative aims to utilize the city's ample rooftop space to generate clean electricity. The goal aligns with Austin's Climate Equity Plan to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, aiming for 245 megawatts of solar energy over the next decade. Funding for these projects remains uncertain pending the city manager's budget proposal later this year.
If you thought the city of Austin already had a program to install rooftop solar systems on its municipal buildings, you weren't alone. Many others believed the same.
We have millions of square feet of rooftop space between our facilities and school district facilities that are empty," said Council Member Ryan Alter, sponsor of the resolution.
The resolution is part of a series of actions the Council has taken to help achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, which includes generating 245 megawatts of solar energy.
Without explicit direction from Council, it's unclear whether funding for this effort will be included in the city manager's proposed 2025-2026 budget.
