City and county officials kick off Wildfire Awareness Month - Austin Monitor
Briefly

As Austin/Travis County enters another wildfire season, local leaders emphasize critical preparedness initiatives to combat the increased wildfire threats. Officials highlighted the city's ranking as the fifth most at-risk in the nation, outside California. Preparedness efforts now involve multiple departments, enhanced firefighter training, the establishment of emergency stations in risk-prone areas, and recent updates to wildland codes. The geographic spread of the wildfire risk is significant, with over half of Austin's habitable land falling within hazardous zones. The community's active involvement is essential in mitigating risks as climate change exacerbates existing conditions.
As we experienced very vividly over the past few years...weather is intensifying due to climate change, and we have to change how we prepare for these emergencies.
The effort now spans numerous departments and has included specialized training for firefighters, new emergency service stations in high-risk areas, and updates to the Community Wildfire Protection Plan.
