Antoni Gaudi's Casa Batllo is reaping the rewards from its continual reinvention
Briefly

Casa Batlló, designed by Antoni Gaudí and completed in 1906, is one of the most visited monuments in Barcelona. Under the ownership of the Bernat family since 1993, the building underwent extensive renovations and was opened to the public in 2002. As a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2005, the site has seen significant increases in visitor numbers and income, reaching a record €56 million in 2023. Restoration efforts continue, with challenges in authenticity, as the family seeks to balance historical accuracy with commercial viability.
Decades of use and a dearth of documentation relating to Gaudí's original vision make distinguishing between authentic elements and later additions difficult. 'I could tell you right now that the house is fully restored, and then suddenly discover something we thought was original isn't,' Gautier says.
In 2023, income from Casa Batlló hit a new record of €56m, a 54% increase from the previous year, with visitor numbers more than doubling.
