"Shakira who accepted a threeyear prison sentence for tax fraud for the 20122014 period, admitted she should have paid taxes in Spain, and agreed to a 7.3 million ($8.5 million) fine presented herself in the statement as a victim: After more than eight years of enduring brutal public shaming, orchestrated campaigns to destroy my reputation, and countless sleepless nights that ultimately affected my health"
Spain’s National Court ruled that Shakira was not a tax resident in Spain in 2011 and annulled the administrative case that required her to pay nearly 55 million euros in back taxes and fines. The court ordered the return of the amounts with interest, totaling about 9 million euros, bringing the refund to more than 60 million euros. The ruling applies only to her tax status in 2011. It does not affect a separate criminal case in which she was already convicted in a final judgment for tax evasion covering 2012 to 2014. Shakira celebrated the administrative outcome, criticized Spain’s Tax Agency, and acknowledged that she should have paid taxes in Spain for the later period, while also accepting a prison sentence and a fine.
