As summer approaches, hosting barbecues becomes popular, and a new study by Which? highlights the best way to chill beer quickly: by using a mixture of ice, cold water, and salt. This method successfully reduced the temperature of beer from 20.5°C to 1.6°C within thirty minutes, outperforming all tested techniques. The lower freezing point of saltwater allows for chilling beer to sub-zero temperatures quicker than ice alone. For those without salt, ice and cold water without salt remain a viable alternative, although less effective.
The experts found that putting bottled beer in a bucket of cold water mixed with salt cools it rapidly, dropping its temperature from 20.5°C to 1.6°C in just half an hour.
Salt water lowers the freezing point, allowing it to chill beer faster than regular ice, bringing temperatures down significantly more as demonstrated in the Which? study.
