
"Michael's career path began as an Anthropology major BA '64 at CCNY, MA '65 in Legal Anthropology at Hunter College NY, PhD '71 in Legal Anthropology at University of California, Berkeley. His PhD field research was in Koforidua, Ghana (1968-1969) studying cross-cultural dispute resolution by observing cases in a western court setting and various traditional chief's courts in the town (population 40,000) with myriad African tribal communities represented."
"He was an Assistant Professor of Legal Anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh (1971-1975) and earned a post-doctoral degree in the Law and Modernization Program at Yale Law School bringing together scholars of law and the social sciences from Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe focusing on Law and Development. He then attended Stanford University Law School JD '78. Michael promoted the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution methods for resolving disputes outside of court."
Born April 2, 1944, Michael Jeffrey Lowy grew up in Sunnyside, Queens, and remained a lifelong sports fan. He earned a BA in Anthropology from CCNY, an MA and PhD in Legal Anthropology, and conducted PhD field research in Koforidua, Ghana, studying cross-cultural dispute resolution in western and traditional chief's courts with diverse tribal communities. He served as Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh, completed post-doctoral work in Yale's Law and Modernization Program, earned a JD from Stanford, and practiced family law in Palo Alto for over forty years while promoting alternative dispute resolution methods inspired by his research. He died unexpectedly from an aortic aneurysm on March 24, 2025, before his 81st birthday and 59th wedding anniversary.
